Marina Grande

The Port of Marina Grande is the main approach to the island. The settlement spreads out along the northern coast opposite the mainland. The village is situated on the three or more levels from the lowest on the quay to the gardens at the back, running from east to west. At the centre, jutting out on the peninsula is the church of compassion (la chiesa della Pietà); on the right, towering over the sea is the imposing Palazzo Merlato. Behind, the hill rises up gently with a road winding up between lemon orchards and vineyards, and the bell-tower of the church of St. Leonardo. The first point of contact with Procida is the quay where the ferries from the mainland dock. The Port is the heart of the island: restaurants, pizzerias, pubs, cafes, grocery shops, boutiques and fish markets…At night Procidans usually walk long the pier, a delightful conclusion to a day spent by the sea.
